Log Cabin Block from Blast from the Past

This pattern is steeped in tradition for all the generations of families who slept snuggly under a Log Cabin. Certainly, it is one of the most versatile of patterns, as you see all manner of things done with it these days. Traditionally it has a red center and “logs” made of hand-me-downs.
However, let your imagination go wild with your fabric choices, and whatever you chose, it will be Great! Piece Mary

Supplies for One Log Cabin Block

  • 2½″ center squares.
  • 1½″ wide strips – 5+ different Light value fabrics (80″ of total linear length)
  • 1½″ wide strips – 5+ different Light value fabrics (80″ of total linear length)

 Instructions

  • Sew  a strip of light fabric to a center square.
  • Trim the fabric even to the edge of the block with scissors
  • Using your finger nail to press the seam to the outside of the block.
  • Sew another light strip to an adjacent side of the first strip. Trim and press.
  • Repeat for the last two sides but with dark fabric now.
  • Continue in this fashion sewing light strips on light and dark on the dark till you have 5 courses and the block is 12½″ square.


Repeat this process to make 20 Log Cabin Blocks.

Once you feel comfortable with the process you can strip piece. Feed a strip of light fabric (right side up) under your machine presser foot. Lay a center square (right side down) on top. Match the seam edge and sew together. Sew a few more stitches and then lay the next center square down and repeat.
