Hourglass Star Block

This block will be used in our opportunity quilt for 2020.

Here are the focus blocks. Choose fabrics that coordinate for the blocks

The guild is providing 6″ squares with a feather design for the light part of the block.
You will need to provide the two matching dark 6″ squares.

  • Start with four 6″ squares.
  • Two light and two dark.
  • Mark the light square with 2 lines 1/4 inch from the diagonal
draw a line 1/4" from the diagonal on the two light blocks
  • Lay the light fabric on dark (good sides together) and sew on the two drawn lines
  • Cut apart between the sewn lines (can be done freehand)
  • Press seams to dark side
  • Lay out your four half square triangles into an hourglass design with the tips of the dark and light touching in the center on the diagonal
  • Sew the left to the right square for both the top and bottom. Press seams open
  • Sew the top and bottom halves together and press this seam open too.
  • Place your block face side up on a small cutting board that you can lift and turn
  • With a ruler measure 5¼” from the center seam and trim any excess.
  • Turn board and repeat on all four sides.
  • You now have a 10½” square
  • Now repeat this process but measure 1½” from the center seam
  • Rotate and repeat till your block is in nine pieces
  • Now for the magic.
  • Turn all the outer edge pieces 180°
  • Turn the center square 90°
  • Bring the small cutting board to the sewing machine
  • Sew the fabric patches as you would a nine patch
  • Place center patches over those on the left and sew together in a row. Top, middle and bottom leaving the thread between.
  • Lay out and open these pieces on the board and snip thread between
  • Place the right edgepieces over center pieces and sew together leaving the thread between attached
  • Press the seams of the top and bottom strip to the outside and the center strip to the center.
  • Sew strips together using the attachment string to make sure you sew the right pieces together
  • If you sew perfect seams, your block should measure 9½” square. For it to work in the quilt it just needs to measure at least 9″ square.

For the 2020 opportunity quilt we need ~100 of these blocks. The guild will provide the light fabric with the feather motif. Do not trim the final block.

We would like to see lots of browns for the dark half of the blocks. Anything from mustard to chocolate brown. We also want some brick reds, turquoise, eggplant purple, dark blue, forest green and olive green.

The fabrics can be varied: batiks, prints, and fabrics that read as solids. The feel should be American Indian and support the beautiful focus blocks that Mary is providing us. I will post those pictures when I have them to give you a better feel for the color. Just avoid neon, pastels or big flower prints.
