Following a quilt pattern is helpful in that you know the how the finished quilt will look.

But what if you want to make a unique quilt?

Then you have to choose quilting elements to combine and hope for the best.

Combining Native American blocks and the star hour glass blocks can seem like a great starting point for a quilt.

Add just a few star blocks around the focus blocks and it looks fantastic.

But then, when you start laying it all out as a quilt the spark disappears.

You have a star quilt laid out in the “Fields and Farrow” design with your focus blocks sprinkled on top.

The Native Americans are no longer the focus of the quilt.

Relaying the stars blocks so that they frame the Native American blocks and keeping colors together calms the quilt.

Better

but…

It’s still two quilts fighting to see which one can dominate!

Would we need to separate them like bickering children?

Would they need their own quilts or could we send each to a different room?

Black borders help to separate the two.

But it needs more…

Attic windows?

Now we have a design that seems to works.

The Star quilt is on top and you can peak through the windows to see the Native American quilt behind. They each have their own room in which they can shine!

There is even a tentative title “Windows into the Past”
