How a Quilt is Made

Here is the story of how Creative Expression quilt circle went about making a quilt for the 30th Holiday Quilt Auction on November 2, 2019.

After last year’s Auction, the circle got together and brainstormed ideas for a quilt. They decided to make a bird quilt.

All members made various bird blocks. They were arranged and it was decided to limit height to 10″ and to set them in rows. More blocks needed..

A few months later with 53 bird blocks, 16 trees and one bird house they were ready to be arranged in even rows. The last bird was saved for the back label.

The sashing between the rows was scrapped, the jumble look is better.

Next the rows were sewn together. Borders were added. A backing was made and it was sent to be professionally quilted.

Now the quilt is almost finished. The quilting works well to enhance the quilt.
Finally the binding needs to be fully attached. A sleeve sewn down, and the last button eyes added.
Lastly a label using the last bird block goes on the back and it will be ready to star in the auction!

This quilt has ended up costing over $200 and a lot of time to make. Hopefully it will be a money maker that not only benefits our guild but also schoolchildren in the county (Operation school bell) and our vet (Operation surf)

Wouldn’t this be a great quilt to hang in a room. It is unique and fun. It is a great quilt from a distance but it entices you to come close and find all the details. The more you look the more you see!
