What happens in Community Quilts?

The Social Sew-a-Thon of the Guild

Community Quilts, previously known as Kid’s Kovers is where guild members get together and make quilts for social causes. When finished, these lap sized quilts  are donated to organizations in our community.

If you have attended our general guild meetings you will remember the table with partially started / finished quilts. Members take these quilts home and complete the next step. This is the home sewing part of Community Quilts.

The Sew-a-Thon happens on the third Saturday of the month. Members head past the Templeton Farmer’s Market on  295 Old Country Rd. It is on the corner of 3rd at the Fellowship Hall of  Bethel Lutheran Church.  Judi and Cynthia bring the bins of fabric and other sewing supplies and we start quilting. On hot summer days when temperatures tops 100º the meetings are cancelled.

All guild member are welcome! This is a great activity for new quilters and for those who want to meet other quilters. This Sew-a-Thon is not just quilting but also a chance to socialize and get help with any quilting trouble you may have and to improve your quilting skills by making basic quilts.

What you need is a sack lunch and some quilting supplies. A sewing machine and supplies on odd numbered months and cutting supplies for the even months. You can come late and you don’t need to stay till 2 PM. You can even just pop in to see what is happening before you commit to helping.

Here is what I found when I went in August

First I had to admire the finished quilts and some partially completed projects that had recently been donated.

If you, like me, love the free table at the guild meeting—this is for you. Community Quilts inherits many a fabric stash and UFOs from retired quilters. A fun activity is to brainstorm about those UFOs and think how they could be finished.

Here are some items I admired.

I was intrigued by a bag of strips. After laying them out and some cutting and piecing I had the makings for only half a lone star and not enough material for the second half.

When I go next month I plan to sew the diamonds together and then brainstorm on how to use them in a quilt.

Hope to see you at the Sew-a-Thon in September there I will be soliciting suggestions!
