Instructions:

Snowballing appears in many of my blocks. Here is a picture summary:
fig.1 –
Take a small square and draw a line or crease on the diagonal
fig.2 – Lay it on the larger base fabric unit and sew a thread’s width to the outside of the line (closer to the outside edge).
fig.3 – Fold triangle to the outside edge, r
everse sewn unit and trim if the triangle overlaps the base fabric.
fig.4 – T
rim the underneath base and triangle fabric to a small seam. The snowball is now complete.
fig.5 –
When the base fabric is not square you can make two different snowballed units that are not interchangeable. Sometimes you want all the blocks identical and other times you want mirrored units. If they are fed through the machine in the same way (left side) they become identical but if units are fed through with a V shape (right side)  between the units they will mirror each other.
Fig.6 The two left units are identical and the two right are mirror images The bottom right unit is the odd man out.

Instructions:

  1. Slice the two 4½” squares on the diagonal to make 4 triangles. You may want to starch these units before cutting to prevent stretching when they are sewn on the bias.
  2. Take the two  1¼”x 2″ pansy pieces
and snowball with the 1¼” square  background fabrics in mirror fashion.
Take the two 1¼”x 2¾” background units and snowball with the 1¼”  square pansy fabrics in mirror fashion.
  3. Take the last four square and the 3½”x2″ pansy units and snowball one corner of each (You snowball the rectangle either way). Now only the yellow center and the 2″ background square should remain unsewn;
  4. Iron all the units and layout as per layout diagram below.
  5. Sew the pansy as shown in the pictures.
  6. Fold the finished pansy unit in half in both directions and iron to create two crease down the center.
  7. Lay a large triangle along one side of the pansy block with the point falling on the center crease. Sew and repeat for the other three sides. Press seams toward the triangles.
  8. Block is done!
